Jonathon Stevenson,
Owner & Director

...and still the one who might come out and measure your room.

Jonathon didn't exactly choose flooring. His dad John had him out helping the fitters before he was a teenager, Saturdays, school holidays, learning the trade whether he liked it or not.

He joined the business properly in 1987 and did it the right way: warehouse, plans, accounts, estimating, fitting. No shortcuts for being the owner's son!

The lesson that stuck longest came from Pat Green, a fitter so trusted that customers would wait months for him rather than let anyone else in. Pat stayed with Allenby Stevenson for fifty years.

One afternoon, Jonathon fitted an entire room while Pat spent most of the morning in the customer's kitchen over a cup of tea. He assumed that next time, they'd ask for him.

They asked for Pat.

He's never forgotten it.

People don't just buy a floor, they buy who's fitting it, how they're treated, and whether someone genuinely cares.

That's still how this business works.

Jonathon has run the store since 2004, you'll still find him in the showroom most days, or out at someone's home with a tape measure in his hand.

THE ALLENBY STEVENSON STORY

Sixty years
in the making.

This is the kind of business that doesn't get built overnight. It gets built over generations, through hard work, through looking after people, and through refusing to cut corners even when it would have been easier to.

1966

The Beginning

Two men. One idea. A street in Grimsby.

In 1966, Mr Allenby and John Stevenson opened their first flooring showroom on Town Hall Street, Grimsby. They'd met at the Co-Op, Mr Allenby the experienced businessman, John a 21-year-old carpet fitter who'd learned the trade at Petchells Furnishers on Cleethorpes Road. When John needed £200 to get the business started, he went to his father. His father said "no, if you want to make something of yourself, you do it through hard work and honesty." So John found the money another way... and paid it back within the first year. Those words, hard work and honesty, have never left this business.

1979

A Growing Family Business

Building on what they'd started.

By the late 1970s, Allenby Stevenson had become one of the area's leading flooring specialists. In 1979, John and his younger brother Andrew took a significant step, they bought Petchells Furnishers, the very company where John had first learned his trade. It's still part of the family today, now known as Stevensons, run by John's daughter Claire and her daughter Georgia. Two businesses, one family, the same values. The carpet store moved into a larger showroom, the former Lindsey Electrical on Victoria Street, and the team continued to grow. Among them: David Pullman, who joined as Estimator and retired 40 years later.

1987

The Next Generation

Learning it properly, from the ground up.

John's son Jonathon joined the business in 1987, straight from school, though in truth, he'd been learning it since he was old enough to carry tools. Saturdays and school holidays spent helping the fitters meant he knew the work before he officially started. His father's approach was the same one his own father had taken: learn every aspect. Warehouse. Plans. Accounts. Estimating. Fitting. There were no shortcuts and no special treatment for being the owner's son. The lesson that stuck longest didn't come from the business. It came from Pat Green, the fitter customers trusted so completely that they'd wait for him rather than let anyone else in. Pat stayed with Allenby Stevenson for 50 years. What he showed Jonathon about the value of a relationship over a transaction is still how this business operates today.

1996

Fire on Victoria Street

They rebuilt. That tells you everything.

In 1996, a fire broke out in a derelict building nearby and travelled through the beams of the adjoining properties until it reached the showroom. The whole store went up. John and Andrew rebuilt, first in temporary premises on Victoria Street, then into the permanent showroom at 83-85 Victoria Street where Allenby Stevenson stands today. The same street, within 100 metres of where it all started in 1966. Some businesses would have used it as a reason to walk away. They used it as a reason to come back stronger.

2004

Jonathon Takes the Helm

The same business. The next chapter.

When Andrew retired in 2004, Jonathon took over the running of the carpet store, and has led it ever since. The products have changed considerably since 1966. LVT, engineered wood, safety flooring, design-led stair runners, the industry has evolved and so has Allenby Stevenson. But the approach has never changed: advise honestly, measure carefully, fit properly, and be there long after the job is done.

2026

60 Years Strong

Proud of where we've come from.

Clear about where we're going.

In 2024, Allenby Stevenson marked sixty years in business, a milestone built not on advertising or expansion, but on the kind of reputation that only comes from doing right by people, job after job, decade after decade. The same Victoria Street showroom. The same values John Stevenson's father passed on without even knowing it. The same belief that a floor isn't just a floor, it's something that has to be right, properly right, for the people who'll live on it every day. We're not finished yet.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

Our values.
Not just words.

Allenby Stevenson made to Measure

Craftsmanship

We employ our own fitters because we won't leave quality to chance. Every installer works for us, is trained to our standard, and carries our name on the job. Whether it's a bedroom carpet or a hotel corridor, the level of care is the same. It has to be. Our reputation depends on every single job, not just the ones that are easy.

Honest Advice

We'll tell you what's right for your space, even when it's not the most expensive option. Our job is to help you find the best floor for your home, your life and your budget. We'll never recommend something because it earns us a better margin. That's not how you build a business that lasts sixty years.

AllenbyStevensoncarpets Range of Flooring

Full Service

From the moment you walk into the showroom to the day your floor is fitted and beyond, we handle everything. Measuring, planning, subfloor preparation, fitting, aftercare. One team, one point of contact, no coordinating between a supplier, a fitter and a helpline that never answers.

AllenbyStevensoncarpets

Long-term Care

Our installation guarantee is two years, twice the industry standard, but that's just the formal version. We've inspected floors eight years after fitting and got manufacturers to replace them at no cost to the customer. We've gone back to repair a carpet damaged by a dropped iron and not charged a penny. We're not here to fit your floor and move on. We want to still be your flooring company in ten years' time.

Part of something bigger.

without losing what makes us us.

As a member of the Carpet 1st buying group, one of the UK's largest independent flooring organisations with over 150 retailers nationwide, we have access to ranges and buying power that most independent shops can only dream of.

But we're still independently owned, we still make our own decisions. When you walk into our showroom, you're dealing with Jonathon and the team, not a regional manager following a head office script.

The best of both worlds: the range and buying power of a national group, with the personal service of a family business that actually gives a damn.
